This European country has emerged as a hotspot for skilled South Africans

The Netherlands has emerged as a magnet for skilled South African professionals, signalling a notable shift in migration trends.

This unprecedented wave is a result of a convergence of factors making the Netherlands an increasingly appealing destination for South African expatriates, according to Roxanna Naidoo, a global partner at Tax Consulting SA.

According to Netherlands’ Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (Central Agency for Statistics), there are an estimated 41,300 South Africans living in the Netherlands. “The country’s active recruitment of talent, particularly in sectors like finance, engineering, and information technology, provides a compelling incentive for South Africans seeking new career horizons,” said Naidoo.

In addition to career opportunities, the Dutch government provides attractive tax incentives for highly skilled migrants.

The 30% tax facility allows foreign workers, including South African expatriates, to receive a significant portion of their salary tax-free, enhancing the financial appeal of the Netherlands for professionals seeking both career growth and fiscal advantages.

Efficient support systems for expatriates in the Netherlands play a pivotal role in easing the transition for South Africans. Programs like the International Expat Centre offer comprehensive assistance,

covering various aspects such as customs, housing, social security, and healthcare, further enhancing the allure of relocating to the Netherlands.

The Netherlands has become a welcoming "home away from home" for South Africans, with a substantial community already residing in the country.

The Dutch emphasis on work-life balance, with a standard workweek of around 35 hours, resonates with South Africans seeking a more balanced and fulfilling professional and personal life.

Securing a Highly Skilled Migrant Residence Permit is crucial for living and working in the Netherlands, with certain salary criteria to be met.

Engineering-related professions dominate the in-demand skills market, along with expertise in various other sectors such as human resources, ICT security, healthcare, and construction.

Comprehensive planning encompassing financial, tax, and healthcare aspects is necessary to navigate potential challenges, said Tax Consulting SA.

Working with providers knowledgeable in international tax ensures a seamless transition and protects expatriates from regulatory issues both in South Africa and the Netherlands.
