Sun City hotel set for comprehensive upgrade

The Sun City hotel is set for a comprehensive upgrade, encompassing all 340 rooms, bedroom corridors, bedroom terraces, and the Sun Terrace, along with various infrastructure improvements.

The renovation will be executed in phases, with the first 56 refreshed rooms expected to be operational by the end of November 2024, just in time for the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

Construction of the Sun City resort began in July 1978 and was completed in a record-setting 16 months at a cost of R30 million.

When it opened on December 19, 1979, it featured only one hotel – the Sun City hotel.

Within a year, Sun City had drawn over 300,000 visitors to its Extravaganza and theatre shows, highlighting the need for more accommodation.

This led to the addition of The Cascades, The Cabanas, and The Palace. Despite these additions, the original Sun City ‘casino’ hotel has always captivated the public’s imagination and remains as popular today as it was in 1979.

In 2016, the hotel underwent a significant upgrade as part of a R1-billion resort-wide renovation and was relaunched as ‘Soho’. However, renaming such an iconic hotel in South Africa required public buy-in.

Brett Hoppe, Sun City GM, said: “It seemed an appropriate time to give the hotel its own identity but this never resonated with customers and they continued to refer to the ‘Sun City hotel’. While we expected some resistance to the change we were surprised by how resolutely people would cling to the original name. When we realised how affectionately the Sun City hotel is embraced by South Africans, we restored the hotel’s original name.”

The current upgrade encompasses all 340 rooms, bedroom corridors, bedroom terraces and the Sun Terrace along with various infrastructure upgrades.

The hotel will offer:

  • 74 family rooms

  • 50 Interleading rooms

  • 2 Paraplegic Rooms

  • 34 Luxury rooms

  • 171 Twin rooms

  • 6 Junior suites

  • 2 Presidential Suites

  • 1 mock-up room (completed)
