RSA.Aero plots upgrade of SA coastal airport

Plettenberg Bay Airport is set for a major upgrade, including a new terminal and a longer runway to accommodate Boeing 737 aircraft.

RSA.Aero won the tender in February 2024 to lease, develop, and operate the airport in partnership with Bitou Municipality.

The upgrades will include a new passenger terminal, extended runway, expanded apron, and enhanced fire, rescue, and emergency services, meeting ICAO Category 6 standards.

Additional improvements include a new car park, service station, and more aircraft hangars.

The development plan divides the airport into seven zones, optimising space for various uses like private aviation, corporate logistics, and a solar farm.

Garden Route Aero, a subsidiary of RSA.Aero, began managing the airport in July 2024, focusing on operational planning and infrastructure audits.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority has noted runway deterioration, requiring detailed assessments and remedial work. Despite the challenges, the partnership is expected to significantly benefit the region, enhancing air travel and boosting the local economy.

The airport currently handles about 30,000 passengers annually, with projections to increase to 150,000 by 2050.

RSA.Aero aims to manage multiple airports across South Africa, emphasizing environmental consciousness and community involvement.

Its vision includes transforming Cape Winelands Airport into a cultural hub with facilities like a plaza, hotel, conference center, and aviation museum, integrating local wine culture and indigenous flora.

It also plans to develop an airport near the Gariep Dam for adventure aviation activities.
