Petrol and diesel prices to rise in South Africa this week

Petrol and diesel prices in South Africa will see an increase on Wednesday.

The cost of unleaded petrol, in both 93 and 95 grades, will go up by R1.21 per litre. This adjustment brings the price of 95 unleaded petrol to R24.45 a litre in Gauteng, while the coastal price will reach R23.73.

Diesel with 0.05% sulphur will see a hike of R1.05 per litre, while the 0.005% sulphur variant will increase by R1.18 per litre. This puts the wholesale price at R22.41 in Gauteng, and R21.69 along the coast.

Additionally, illuminating paraffin's wholesale price will rise by 64c per litre, and the maximum retail price for LP gas will increase by 41c per kg.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) reported a depreciation of the rand against the US dollar last month, contributing 17.71c/litre and 18.74c/litre to the Basic Fuel Prices of petrol and diesel, respectively.

Simultaneously, international oil prices surged, adding another R1.05-R1.20/litre to the local fuel costs, depending on the type.

Moreover, the decommissioning of the Kroonstad pipeline on December 31st, 2023, impacted the transport tariffs of fuel to specific Magisterial District Zones.

Following Ministerial approval, adjustments to these tariffs for petrol and diesel in these zones will range from a decrease of 5.7c/litre to an increase of 0.9c/litre, depending on the zone. These changes will take effect from March 6th, 2024.

The Slate Levy remains unchanged at 0.00c/litre this month, aligning with the Self-Adjusting Slate Levy Mechanism.
