Major boost for Ballito tourism and economy

Ernie Els has entered into an agreement with IFA Hotels & Resorts, a company listed on the Kuwait Stock Exchange, to lend his brand to the upcoming championship golf course, golfing academy, and additional amenities within the R10 billion Zimbali Lakes development.

The collaboration will introduce several of Els' international brands to the Zimbali Lakes resort near Ballito, including the Ernie Els Signature Golf Course, the Els Performance Golf Academy, Ernie Els Suites, and The Big Easy Bar & Grill.

These additions mark a turning point for golf tourism in the region and on the continent, according to Werner Burger, CEO of IFA Hotels & Resorts South Africa.

In addition to his professional ventures, Els will establish a residence at the exclusive Tatali section of the Zimbali Lakes resort. His involvement signifies a significant milestone for the project, which has been in development for nearly two decades.

Initial discussions focused on Els contributing to the golf course design, but the partnership expanded to include various aspects of his brand, enhancing the overall offerings of the resort.

Els expressed his belief in the project's potential, citing the growing interest in the North Coast region among families and investors. He anticipates spending more time in South Africa, particularly attracted by the favorable weather conditions in the area during the winter months.

“It is no secret that Cape Town has dominated international tourism and semigration in SA. However, the North Coast – from Ballito and further North – has an average of 36-40 families relocating to the area every month,” Els said.

“Club Med choosing to develop just North of Ballito indicates that this will now become an international destination and with that comes huge international investment opportunities and natural exposure,” he added.

The Zimbali Lakes project, spearheaded by IFA Hotels & Resorts, represents a significant investment in the tourism and property sectors of South Africa.

While the journey has seen its share of challenges, including delays and ownership changes, the project remains a focal point for both local and international investors.
