Iconic Cape Town building to house innovative hotel experience

In a bid to inject new life into the heart of Cape Town's central business district (CBD), plans are underway for the development of a new hotel offering an array of amenities including a games arcade, co-working spaces, and a round-the-clock rooftop dining experience.

Scheduled to open its doors soon, the 127-room hotel will take shape within the iconic City Park building, formerly known as the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital, which has stood vacant for several years following the hospital's relocation to new premises on the Foreshore.

Ennismore Hotels, a globally recognised hospitality brand, has secured the rights to launch the Mama Shelter Cape Town Hotel, marking its inaugural venture into the South African market.

Mama Shelter Cape Town aims to be a hub of vibrancy, offering guests an affordable yet stylish accommodation experience.

Alongside the hotel, the building will house retail spaces, offices, and residential apartments.

The hotel will feature 127 rooms across various categories, as well as branded residences, studios, and apartments catering to diverse accommodation needs.

Additionally, the hotel will boast a range of facilities including a gym, rooftop restaurant, pool, meeting rooms, and co-working spaces spanning over 380 square meters.

A unique feature of the hotel will be the introduction of Mama Play, a sprawling 742-square-meter arcade offering entertainment options such as tenpin bowling, karaoke, and event spaces. Ennismore will also manage a separate restaurant on Bree Street, one of Cape Town's liveliest thoroughfares.

Cedric Gobilliard, Brand COO for Mama Shelter at Ennismore, expressed enthusiasm about the venture, emphasising Mama Shelter's ethos as more than just a hotel but a vibrant living space where guests can connect, dine, and unwind.

Ennismore's partnership with Kasada, a leading real estate private equity platform dedicated to the hospitality sector in Africa, underscores their commitment to reinvigorating Cape Town's hospitality scene.
