Fourways Mall boosts its management in bid to return to profitability

Fourways Mall, a long-standing cornerstone of retail and entertainment in Johannesburg North, is making significant leadership changes in a bid to return to profitability.

In partnership with new strategic asset manager Flanagan & Gerard Group and property manager Moolman Group, the mall is implementing a unique management approach designed to address post-pandemic challenges.

For three decades, Fourways Mall has been pivotal to its community, and its future vision remains clear: to become a vibrant, engaging, secure, and resilient shopping environment.

This vision aims to meet the needs of its community, customers, retailers, and all stakeholders, offering more reasons to visit more often and providing a great experience for everyone.

Paul Gerard, Managing Director of Flanagan & Gerard, said: "The mall's transformation is not just about enhancing its physical spaces and retail mix but redefining its operations at every level. We're building on what works well and improving where needed.

"This new chapter blends robust management practices with innovative strategies. Though the management team works behind the scenes, they set the stage for every aspect of the Fourways Mall experience.”

He said that managing Fourways Mall, especially during a phase of significant change, is a complex and intensive task.

The multifaceted improvement programme, combined with daily management needs, has expanded the capabilities required of its centre management team.

Johann Klopper, Asset Manager at Moolman Group, said: “This is a unique time for Fourways Mall, necessitating an exceptional approach to its management. We’re implementing meticulous best practices, including stringent compliance measures and robust systems, to ensure that current management actions yield long-term value. The goal is to create a resilient framework that can adapt to challenges and opportunities while fostering strong, positive relationships.”

In a bid to strengthen the Fourways Mall management team, Moolman Group has appointed Juan Palm as the new General Manager, effective from 1 July 2024.

A seasoned professional with over a dozen years of experience in property management and leasing for South Africa's premier real estate portfolios, Palm is also a former provincial-level rugby player, which he believes has instilled the discipline and team-centric mindset essential for this role.

"To successfully manage an asset of this size, you have to be a team player. Working together and getting everyone's buy-in is crucial for taking Fourways Mall to where it needs to be," he said.

With its new management team and strategic direction, Fourways Mall is poised to enhance its role as a premier retail destination, adapting to future challenges while continuing to serve its community effectively.
