Construction underway for South Africa's largest wind farm in Mpumalanga

Seriti Green has launched the first phase of its R25 billion wind farm project in Mpumalanga, aiming to build 900MW of renewable wind energy projects over the next three years.

The initial phase, the 155MW Ummbila Emoyeni facility, is currently under construction and expected to be completed by mid-2026 at a cost of around R4.5 billion.

Funded by Seriti shareholders Standard Bank, Venn Energy, and Rand Merchant Bank (RMB), this project marks the first major initiative since Seriti Resources, one of South Africa’s largest coal miners, acquired Windlab and launched Seriti Green in 2023.

Mike Teke, Chairman of Seriti Green and Group CEO of Seriti Resources, along with Peter Venn, CEO of Seriti Green, said that this is South Africa's largest wind farm and the first of its kind in Mpumalanga.

The facility is anticipated to supply 75% of the power needs for Seriti’s coal mines, significantly enhancing the group's efficiency, sustainability, and profitability.

In April, Seriti Green reached financial close on this phase.

Located in Mpumalanga, the project will bring significant investment to the region, create approximately 800 jobs, and offer procurement and social investment opportunities.

As a responsible coal producer, Seriti Resources said it is committed to a just energy transition to a low-carbon economy while addressing South Africa’s energy needs.

The 155 MW generated in the initial phase will be wheeled through the national grid to Seriti Resources’ coal mining operations, reducing carbon emissions by 5.1 mega tonnes per year.
